Eternal Memories of the Scent of Wine
The Taichung winery of Taisho Wine Co.,Ltd.was
established in 1916, and was the largest sake factory
of the hundreds of wineries in Taiwan. After World
War Ⅱ ended,it became the fifth winery of Taiwan
Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau. The main products
included yellow wine, Shaoxing wine, and drinkable
rice wine.Taichung winery was eventually relocated
in 1998 after operating for 80 years due to considerations
of urban development.
As the wheels of time continued to turn, the former
site of the winery became an industrial remnant, which
attracted growing attention due to the cultural meaning
it possessed in searching for historical context.Advanced
countries around the world all value the revitalization
and reuse of idle spaces, and have allowed countless industrial
heritage sites to be reborn as cultural and creative industries.
This emerging trend has created massive waves in Taiwan,
transforming the old Taichung winery under the Ministry of
Culture(MOC) into a cultural & creative industries park
,giving it a new place and mission.
When facing the daunting task of restoring the old Taichung
winery, which was devastated to the point of almost lying
in ruins, and lacking sufficient funding, the Bureau of Cultural
Heritage (BOCH) followed the principle of prioritizing exterior
over interior, large over small, and primary over secondary.
In the first four years, the BOCH completed the restoration of
the International Performance and Exhibition Hall, Ya-Tang Hall,
Heng-Dao Hall, Truth Academy, and Dou Kan Cottage. After two rounds
of landscaping, the construction of four outdoor restrooms, renovation
of building R08, drainage and sewage system improvement, and restoration
of the carpentry workshop, all of the necessary hardware facilities
gradually became complete.
As the park opened to the public, we introduced countless exhibitions
and cultural creative events of various scales. The farewell port scene
of the movie "Cape No. 7" was filmed here, and many fans visit to see
it with their own eyes. Temple fairs are held here whenever it is Chinese
New Year, and the A+ Creative Festival provides a platform for students
to compete with each other. The restoration of historic buildings has been
gradually completed, and artists, designers, traditional craftsmen and
cultural creative talents of central Taiwan have been invited to become
residents in buildings R06, RO7, R08 and R12, creating a cluster of workers
in cultural and creative industries. This has made the park a new landmark
that designers, cultural creative talents and artists of central Taiwan all
want to visit, and it has driven the development of the business district at
the rear of Taichung station. The park links together art and culture resources
in the South District of Taichung and has become an important cultural creative
cluster in central Taiwan.
Different flowers bloom throughout the four seasons in this garden-like
park. Visitors come in like an endless stream from sunrise to sunset to work
out or to go for a stroll., children are playing while the elderly talk to
each other. They all become part of the scenery. The park has become a welcoming
destination for residents of nearby communities.
The events held here are all associated with the core philosophy of “architecture,
design, art exhibitions and performances” We have gained the approval of various
communities, whether it be holding cultural creative product exhibitions that
generate revenue, graduation exhibitions of college design departments that
are purely for show, or educational workshops. These events are the results of
the park's diverse development strategy.
Of the five cultural and creative industries parks, only Taichung's is managed
by the government. Taichung Cultural & Creative Industries Park still faces many
challenges in the future, and all members of the BOCH must shoulder heavy
responsibilities as they move forward with professionalism and great passion.
Only then can we meet the expectations of all sectors.
