陳欽生（1949－），在放棄利物浦大學的留學資格後，於1967年以僑生身分來臺，就讀國立成功大學化學工程系。由於時常前往臺南美國新聞處瀏覽英文報紙及雜誌，被捲入1971年的「臺南美國新聞處爆炸案」，遭到誘騙逮捕，歷經嚴刑逼供、配合編造自白，儘管事後證實他並無涉案，卻又被羅織參與共產黨罪名判處死刑；在多方營救下，最終卻仍被求處12年徒刑。熬過漫長刑期出獄後，因身無身分證，加上政治犯的標籤，讓他甚至一度露宿街頭、翻找餿水維生。儘管後來遇見貴人為他辦妥身分證、尋得工作；儘管後來結識妻子、組成幸福的家庭……陳欽生自言，心裡仍有一塊大石頭壓著般，那些痛苦與冤屈的記憶，往往悄然襲上心頭，無法獲得真正的平靜。
2009年起，生哥開始參與人權相關運動，從「被騙出來講故事」到主動走入人權園區為參觀民眾導覽，甚至屢屢遠赴綠島，為年輕朋友講述當年被監禁的時光。隨著一次次受難記憶的回溯與揭露，心裡的那塊石頭似乎逐漸縮小、減輕。2018年吳易蓁、謝璧卉創作人權繪本《說好不要哭》，故事主角愛旅行的海豚東東就是以生哥為原型，而後也被夾腳拖劇團改編為兒童劇目。
從白色恐怖受難者成為人權運動者，從言語口述到文字書寫，生哥與許許多多的受難者前輩們努力述說著，無非是想讓更多的人知道還有這段歷史，以及歷史灰燼下所掩蓋的真相。面對歷史，我們需要更多的真實。因為真實自有無法抵擋的力量。

1949年出生於馬來西亞滿山偏僻小村莊的陳欽生，原本因為家境因素，讀完高中後不想繼續升學，但在母親與兄姐不斷地鼓勵下，又經過高中同學的邀約，他決定來到台灣繼續求學。順利進入成功大學就讀後，大三下學期，1971年3月3日這天，剛上完課的陳欽生，準備回家洗澡到女友家吃飯。他行經每日都會經過的租屋處巷口，一名黑衣人突然現身攔住他，詢問他認不認識陳欽生？他爽快地承認就是本人後，黑衣人藉故說有親戚從馬來西亞到台北，不方便下來台南看他，委託他們載陳欽生一程北上。陳欽生不疑有他，一上車到台北後，等待他的是長年被囚禁的牢獄歲月。
陳欽生先被調查局構陷為台南美新處爆炸案的兇手，後來爆炸案破案後，他又被轉送到景美看守所，逼迫承認在馬來西亞就加入共產黨組織，他是假借求學名義來台的間諜。從調查局到景美看守所這二個多月間，他受到諸多刑求；而即便馬來西亞官方積極提供資料、企圖救援，都不為當局所採納。最後陳欽生被判處12年徒刑，送往綠島國防部綠島感訓監獄服刑。
1981年，陳欽生從綠島被送到生產教育實驗所，回到較為自由的環境，他開始思索自己回到社會後的未來。然而，甫出獄的頭三年，在尚未取得身分證的情況下，他只能到處流浪。直到他終於拿到身分證，才在難友周順吉的幫助下，認識了願意雇用他的老闆，得以在業務經理的職位上發揮他的語言長才。後來再順利自己成立公司。陳欽生事業有成之後，不僅加入慈濟，也參與人權園區的諸多活動，希望能用自己一點微薄的力量貢獻社會。他也重新思考，應該要走出過往的苦痛，把自己的故事說給更多的人聽，不要讓這樣的苦難再度發生。

真實的力量

1949年至1992年，臺灣經歷了漫長的白色恐怖時期，期間有無數的人民遭受迫害、被逮捕、審訊、甚至失去生命。國家機器對個人的審查與箝制，使得許多受難者即便獲釋，也難以走出心靈的囚牢。
幸運的是，隨著解嚴後自由民主的來臨，許多的受難者前輩嘗試說出自己在戒嚴體制下的遭遇、被剝奪的人生片段。經歷了漫長的歲月，曾經劇痛的傷口早已變作隱隱的舊患；重新揭開傷疤固然疼痛難忍，但唯有嘗試回憶、嘗試傾吐，才有痊癒的可能。
民眾聆聽前輩故事時，總是難掩臉上的驚嘆與不忍；而前輩環顧著眼前年輕的面孔，像是獨自背負許久的重擔得到交託一般，露出如釋重負的神情。
每一次的訴說，都是一次與過往巨大陰霾的戰鬥。

The Weight Papers Carry

How much weight are a few pieces, or even just one piece, of paper expected to carry?
I did not know about Mr. Chin Him-san, an alumnus of our Chemical Engineering Department enrolled in 1971, and his tragic story until I had to attend or host a series of rehabilitation ceremonies for our victimized alumni who were implicated in the so-called “NCKU Communist Plot,” one of a great number of “white terror” cases that cowed campuses around Taiwan into fearful submission in the 1960s and 70s. Technically speaking, Mr. Chin’s case was not even related to the Plot and was included in the ceremonies in an incidental manner. Moreover, unlike those involved in the Plot (who were at least left-wing Marx-reading enthusiasts), the charge he faced and the sentence he suffered from were totally unfounded and unjustifiable. In other words, he was a marginal one among the marginalized, an utterly innocent among the “innocents.” In one ceremony wherein the school awarded to the alumni the diplomas of graduation which they would have received but were deprived of, Mr. Chin got very emotional and kept repeating how great his mom’s expectations had been of this diploma and how pleased she would be if she could witness this moment. I fully understand his agitation because I know, for decades in the second half of the previous century, how many oversea Chinese students of poor family backgrounds from South East Asia migrated to and studied in Taiwan, especially NCKU in Southern Taiwan, geographically and culturally close to their homes. The diplomas of graduation, the “pieces of paper” some college students now jeer at, would guarantee these oversea Chinese students not only solid knowledge and useful skills but substantial income, social promotion, and family pride when they returned home. These hopes that Mr. Chin and his mom must have harbored were simply nipped at the bud, abruptly and senselessly.
Although Mr. Chin escaped a certain death sentence through the intervention of Amnesty International and got back on his feet through the help of his friends after 12 years of imprisonment, he could not lift the depression weighing down on his mind and heart. Confusion, doubt, and anger about his misfortunes continued to haunt him, no matter how much he once wanted to “forget about them.” Then he realized that, to cope with the tragedy, he had to speak it out and write it down. Story telling is therapeutic by lifting the “weight.” Speaking to the formerly ignorant public makes the listeners share in as well as process the negative feelings along with him. Committing the life story to paper enables the written record to retain the memory of his existence and the meaning of his experience. The pages of this memoir are indeed psychologically and historically overloaded, almost unbearable but imperative to flip through.
Last year a local horror-movie blockbuster Detention (the Chinese title being Back to School) tells a fictional story whose plot is, however, based on the history of white terror suppressions in the mid-20th century Taiwan. I am glad to know that, like the protagonist in the movie, Mr. Chin does not eventually return to the campus of NCKU just to relive the nightmare but to relieve, if only partially, the heavy burdens that have weighed his body and souls down for decades. The school has been trying to do what this book is doing for Mr. Chin.
