The Historic Mining Trail can be traced back to the original trails that was
created when oil well No. two was first drilled in 1904. As the discovery and drilling for oil continued, the trail was later extended from Beiliao to Nanliao. However, with the depletion of oil wells and the opening of special roads by CPC, the trails scattered between the oil wells lost their purpose and were overgrown with grass.
In 1978, the Workers' Memorial Stone was constructed and the route from Beiliao to the Monument Square was established. In 1981, the Taiwan Oil Field Exhibition Hall as well as the incline cableway was constructed in Chuhuangkeng. The incline cableway become an essential form of transportation for visiting tourist. Because each incline cableway only has room for up to 12 visitors at a time; hiking trails were introduced along the incline cableway route outside the exhibition hall to encourage walking and hiking while simultaneously reducing waiting times. In 2009, the Hakka Affairs Council funded the renovation of the trails. In 2019, the Ministry of Culture agreed to subsidize the Miaoli Chuhuangkeng Mining Industry Historic Site Regeneration Project which would restore the Historic Mining Trails to its original state.
To maintain the habitat and the ecological integrity of the Historic Mining Trails and avoid irreversible damage, the principle of“Taken from Nature, Given Back to Nature”was the most important deciding factor for which paving materials should be used to renovate the Historical Mining Trails. In order to reduce transportation costs and use sustainable materials during the renovation, stones that were originally found around the trails were used to build the stairs to the trail. This renovation was all constructed carefully by hand in order to preserve the natural ecological environment and the historical sites of the oil mining industry along the trail.
With the modernization and the development of science and technology, craftsmanship reflecting the local environment have gradually vanished or been replaced by modern materials and tools. Because of this, the traditional workmanship that created a connection between the people and the land has been lost. The importance of creating these the natural trails by hand was not only to reflect the traditional construction methods and reconnect the people to the landscape but also to encourage people to reflect on their environment impact. This reflection and exploration can lead to a better understanding of our position as humans within the environment and how we can rebuild the lost relationship by using our hands.
