序言／導讀
On August 1, 2016, the first Indigenous Peoples' Day since taking her office, President Tsai Ing-wen apologized to the indigenous peoples on behalf of the government. Her apology set forth the operations of the Presidential Office Indigenous Historical Justice and Transitional Justice Committee (the Indigenous Justice Committee), and the journey of truth-seeking and facilitating ethnic reconciliation, which included investigating land justice for indigenous peoples and the restitution thereof, adopting the Indigenous Languages Development Act, creating the indigenous historical perspective, and fact-finding and compensating of nuclear waste storage site on Orchid Island.
This special collection documents the results achieved by the Indigenous Justice Committee, and the background stories in the three years since its establishment. Readers can gain insight into the process and significance of the Indigenous Justice Committee's establishment and the commissioners' contributions in the first and second terms, as well as the efforts of the 5 subcommittees and across agencies. By reviewing and reflecting on the results, we hope to guide our readers to further contemplate the reason historical justice and transitional justice are needed in the society of Taiwan.
