序言/導讀
Located in the middle of the East and
Southeast Asia island arcs, Taiwan
has been a shipping hub and a military
stronghold of strategic importance in the
Asia-Pacific region since ancient times.
Such a geographical location grants Taiwan
a rich tapestry of culture and humanistic
landscape woven over the course of history.
The National Taiwan Museum of
Fine Arts (NTMoFA) has proactively
engaged in international exchange
since its inauguration, and the research,
interpretation, and construction of
Taiwanese art history has always been high
on its agenda. By means of exhibitions,
publications, forums, and seminars, the
National Cheng Kung University. This
brilliant work will definitely bring Taiwan’s
time-honored, diversified arts and cultures
into international spotlight.
The textual criticism of historical material
on arts and the studies into artists and
their works have evolved with the newly
unearthed documents and novel findings,
whilst the redefinition and reinterpretation
of historical perspectives and insights
have opened up kaleidoscopic horizons of
understanding. In this monograph, Prof.
Hsiao’s discerning eye traces the history
of Taiwanese art back to more than 30,000
years ago, starting from the prehistoric
cultures during the Paleolithic Age all
the way to Taiwan’s contemporary art in
the 21st century. Adopting a concise and
flowing style, Prof. Hsiao picks up multiple
threads of discussion and weaves them into
a comprehensive context of Taiwanese art
history, in which the fascinating cultural
diversity of Taiwan and the evolution of
different artistic fields find expression. He
also touches upon the question as to how
regime change and technological progress
exerted influence on the development of art
and culture and meanwhile catalyzed artists’
NTMoFA managed to provide a platform
and a channel for the international society
to approach and understand the very
content of Taiwanese art. In recent years,
Taiwanese artists have gained increasing
visibility in the global art scene on account
of their outstanding creativity. However,
an English introduction to the general
history of Taiwanese art remains wanting
for our international friends who try to
know Taiwanese art with intense interest
and curiosity. To remedy this deficiency,
the NTMoFA specifically planned the
publication of A Brief History of Taiwanese
Art, an English monograph on Taiwanese
art history written by Prof. em. ChongRay Hsiao from the Department of History,
innovative creativity that collectively formed
a pluralistic system of Taiwanese art.
As the first English monograph on the
general history of Taiwanese art published
by the NTMoFA, A Brief History of Taiwanese
Art well presents the amazing cultural
abundance and diverse artistic ethos
accumulated in Taiwan over the past 30,000
years. With an undertone accentuating
the preservation of cultural and historical
memories, it not only reflects the author’s
scholarly view and deep concern about
the history of Taiwanese art, but also
seamlessly incorporates the historical
marks of arts nurtured by this island. In
sum, we fully expect this monograph to
afford the world a mesmerizing glimpse of
Taiwan’s diverse cultural heritage and great
artistic creativity.
