MISSION
Inaugurated in 1988, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) operates under the Ministry of Culture as the only national-level art museum in Taiwan. With a focus on visual art, NTMoFA is dedicated to collecting and researching the country's modern and contemporary art. It curates exhibitions, fosters international art exchange, promotes art education, and engages the public in appreciating a variety of art forms. In doing so, the museum strives for preserving fine arts and cultural legacy, inspiring artists, enhancing people's connoisseurship, and ultimately connecting local and international art communities and initiating dialogues about art.
LOCATION
NTMoFA is conveniently located at the heart of Taichung City in central Taiwan. Situated to the museum's north, along the Calligraphy Greenway, is the National Museum of Natural Science. To its south lies the famous Greenway Shopping District. The museum's unique ambiance significantly influences nearby cultural and business activities, making the area a renowned art and cultural zone in the city.
ARCHITECTURE
NTMoFA spans 102,000 square meters of land, including its Public Outdoor Sculpture Park. Its oblong east-west building comprises two underground floors (including a collection warehouse) and three above-ground floors, offering a total floor area of 49,213 square meters. Among them, 13,351 square meters are dedicated to exhibition areas, and 5,495 square meters are utilised as educational space. NTMoFA stands as one of the largest art museums in Asia.
At the museum's main building, there is a glass corridor that seamlessly connects the outdoor landscape and activities with the indoor performance and exhibition space, extending the urban greenbelt in the local area. The north-south glass corridor seamlessly integrates the activities in the public park with the gallery, while inviting people from outside to enter the building. This spatial transition encourages visitors to immerse themselves in a museum setting and appreciate art.
VISION – AN INCLUSIVE MUSEUM
NTMoFA provides services to a wide range of visitors, including families, school children, teenagers, and adults. Specialised services are also extended to minority groups and art professionals, such as art teachers, students, artists, researchers, and all members of the art industry. The museum's services are designed to cater to the diverse needs of different age groups and varied audience bases.
To foster a shared vision among museum staff based on the mission goals of the 2015 "iCARE" logo, NTMoFA integrates the concept of social inclusion into its practices. The iCARE logo encapsulates the following mission goals: Customisation (providing tailored museum services), Accessibility (operating as a fully accessible museum), Responsibility (fulfilling our social responsibilities), and Edutainment (educating through entertainment). The museum strives to create an increasingly inclusive and accessible art environment, which crystallizes our ambition for art education and museum services—to become an Inclusive Museum.
