本書分為兩大部分。第一部分重建「共同畬語」（Common Shē）的語音系統，即中國畬族使用的近緣漢語方言的祖語形式。本研究採用傳統比較法，對17個現代畬語方言資料進行系統性比對，並輔以其他畬語變體資料，最終構建假設性的語音系統。研究認為，共同畬語與共同新客家話（Common Neo-Hakka）為姊妹語言，均源自一個共同祖語，本書稱之為「共同客家─畬語（Common Hakka-Shē）」。第二部分基於第一部分的共同畬語重建單音節及先前新客家語比較研究成果，對二者進行系統比較，以重建更高階的共同客家─畬語語言系統，並分析其語音、詞彙與語法特徵，提出早期中南漢語演變的研究方向。附錄收錄647組畬語與新客家語音節對應，以及658組畬語詞彙對應，涵蓋單音節與多音節詞，提供比較重建的實證資料，並附英文索引，為未來完整畬語比較語源詞典的編纂提供範例。

柯蔚南（W. South Coblin）是美國著名漢語語言學家，專精於中古漢語、方言學及漢語歷史音韻學研究。他長期致力於漢語音韻與歷史比較研究，曾任愛荷華大學教授，對中古漢語音系、閩語及西南官話的研究具有深遠影響，著有多部重要專書與論文。
