Josiane Cauquelin is a distinguished French ethnologist and anthropologist, currently an honorary researcher at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CASE), a research unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).
She has dedicated most of her youth and academic passion to the Taiwanese indigenous cultures. Her research on the language and culture of the Nanwang Puyuma community in Taitung, in particular, has made profound contributions to both local and international academia.
As a foreign woman scholar, she initially faced challenges with strict, traditional Puyuma rituals, some of which prohibited female participation. However, her unwavering passion deeply moved their people. She was even privileged enough to move into the homes of officiants and shamans to record their daily life and eventually became fluent in the Puyuma language, devoting immense effort in studying its linguistic structure.
In recognition of her over four decades of exceptional contribution to promoting, translating, and preserving the Puyuma culture and language in Europe, she received the 23rd "Taiwan-France Cultural Award" in 2018 (presented in 2019). This award is jointly presented by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture and the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques under the Institut de France, the highest academic body in France.
The "Taiwan-France Cultural Award", established in 1996 and held annually since, recognizes institutions and individuals who have made remarkable contributions to promoting Taiwanese culture in France, Europe, and Taiwan.
Other notable publications:
• 2004: The Aborigines of Taiwan—The Puyuma: From Headhunting to the Modern World
• 2008: Ritual Texts of the Last Traditional Practitioners
• 2015: Nanwang Puyuma-English Dictionary (which has become a vital reference book for the preservation of the Puyuma language)

Josiane Cauquelin has been deeply engaged in the field of Puyuma ethnology since 1983. She has investigated Puyuma social structure, traditions and religion in great depth, recording ritual texts from both male and female officiants, and noting legends whenever the opportunity arose. Although she is primarily an ethnologist, her oeuvre also includes an excellent grammatical sketch and dictionary of Nanwang Puyuma. (Taken from the first paragraph of the Preface)
