Taiwan was ranked at the fifth place in the Competitiveness Index of “2005/2006 global competitiveness report” published by World Economic Forum (WEF). International Institute for Management Development (IMD) based in Lausanne Switzerland also moved Taiwan’s economic power position upward to the eleventh place in its newly published “2005 global competitiveness report”. Taiwan has well demonstrated her strong competitiveness especially for her excellent performance in “science & technology” and “business efficiency”, which have received outstanding recognition from the global community.Facing the major changes in the global knowledge-based economics as well as the pressures from some emerging nations, Taiwan has to identify the new directions to move forward. Taiwan has created her own competitive advantages in each point of the supply chain, but is still in short for the integrated innovation capability for the full industrial chain. Only staying in the right course of industrial value chain, Taiwan would be able to identify the business opportunities and continue to upgrade her national competitiveness. As such, Industrial Technology Department under Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has sponsored Industy & Technology Intelligence Services (ITIS) Program for years to do the industrial analysis research. Taiwan’s industries, facing the dynamic change of the environment, could use the resulted in-depth technology and market research information as the references to do the strategic planning for the business internationalization and business investment with allocated global resources. The information could also be used to enhance the quality of the business planning decision. An upgraded industrial economic face in Taiwan can therefore be expected. This book entitled of “ 2006 Taiwan Industrial Outlook ” published by ITIS Program collects the outcomes of the research in the selected industries. The book has 19 chapters, in which each chapter has the contents of the specific industrial research formatted into four major parts namely industrial status, industrial development trend analysis, major events with the impact analysis, followed by the conclusions. The purpose of this book is providing the industries with the intelligent knowledge of Taiwanese industrial development and the international competitiveness to assure the success in the identified business opportunities.
