序言/導讀
There are dismal predictions that the urban fine dust (PM, Particles Matters),
which in recent years has been spreading around East Asia, could lead to an
even greater number of deaths than those caused by water shortages and
deteriorating sanitary conditions. As such predictions approach reality, grave study
results show that fine dust causes 3.2 million premature deaths and causes direct
harm to the health of 76 million people in the world every year. Fine dust can
be defined as having a PM 10 (10㎛, about 1/7 the thickness of a healthy
person's hair), and of this fine dust about 50% of its composition has a PM 2.5
(2.5㎛). There are various causes of PM formation, such as the burning of coal,
industrial combustion, automobile exhaust fumes, ships, operation of construction
equipment, and because the formation mechanism is so complex, it is also
difficult to specify and limit the major sites of its occurrence. In reality, even
though a lot of effort is being put into finding solutions for the PM problem, it
is unfortunate that no fundamental solution can be found.
If we are to offer a long term solution, a transformation of interest in and
worth of environmental and energy issues can be accomplished through
education. This is because the environmental and energy issues are ones which
are directly connected to people's lives and economic activity.
Where does the energy we use every day come from?
It can be said that much of it comes from fossil fuels. It is clear, however,
that the era of fossil fuels must come to an end. A comprehensive plan must be
devised in which it is necessary to build a sustainable energy system that will
gradually but steadily and stabilize. The change towards a perception that energy
is each and every person's own problem, can be linked to efficient action.
Over the past 10 years, we have made efforts to lead through education in a
transformation of the value placed on the environment and energy. The result, at
an international level including Korea, Japan and Taiwan (we call it the KJT
Green Energy Project), is that the development of a joint education program on
'Green Energy' has been planned, and its implementation has been agreed upon.
Students of these three countries will all be able to study in this program at the
same time. I hope, afterwards, the results of this study are expected to expand
in China, Thailand and Vietnam etc.
