Siinˇ Mungˇ Repositioning the Hakka in Contemporary Taiwan

Foreword Siinˇ Mungˇ -- Taiwan’s Hakka in a Seeking-the-Common-Good Society Taiwan has long been an island with multiple ethnic groups. Living on it, these ethnic groups constantly create and present the beauty of diverse cultures of Taiwan. At the Hakka Affairs Council, we strive to create Hakka culture values. Our aims also include respecting the coexistence of diverse cultures and letting individual ethnic groups establish a new ethnic-mainstreaming model together in an environment where every ethnic group enjoys its subjectivity. The traditional culture formed by the Hakka ethnic group in the plains and low elevation mountains in Taiwan over time respects nature and is sustainable and shared with fellow Hakkas. The Hakka ethnic group moreover has constructed shared contemporary mainstream values, which stimulates cultural innovation and deepens the development of the civil society in Taiwan, with other ethnic groups. Siinˇ Mungˇ refers to the mutual respect and gratitude the Hakka ethnic group and the Taiwanese society pay to each other. Unlike other books that stressed on the origins of the Hakka, this book tried to re-interpret “the Hakka” by expounding multiple arguments regarding the origin of the Hakka and the constructive dimension of history; understanding common features among the global Hakka from a separated but connected global network; discovering rich Taiwan’s Hakka culture through fine arts, such as literature, music and traditional operas; presenting unique everyday culture of the Hakka from everyday life and folklore; discussing the constant reflection and motivation toward social movements by the Hakka from the ancient times to the present; understanding the course over which the Hakka ethnic group fought for language rights, broadcasting rights, and rights of interpreting history; and being concerned about the universal value of people in Taiwan. All made the publication of this book very meaningful. This book moreover indicated that the Hakka are an indispensable element of the culturally diverse Taiwan. While we are grateful that Taiwan has nourished the Hakka culture, the Hakka also have enriched the culture in Taiwan. We sincerely pay our highest regards and gratitude to all enthusiastic authors, scholars, and experts and their expertise. Their research has enriched and deepened the capacity of academic research on Taiwan and the Hakka. We hope readers would be able to learn more about the subjectivity and diversity of Taiwan’s Hakka and have more passion and reflection regarding the Taiwanese society and culture from this book. Climbing up a mountain and looking at another far off, we look forward to more “our stories” from Taiwan’s Hakka and other ethnic groups in the future. Yiong Con-Ziin Minister Hakka Affairs Council
